Thermoforming and heat bending: from flat sheet to a curved component
PROCESS
Component forming process
Forming is the stage that determines the final geometry of the transparent component: its profile, curvature and thickness distribution across the entire surface. Maintaining consistent thickness - essential for preventing optical distortion - is what distinguishes advanced thermoforming from conventional industrial processes.
TECHNOLOGY
LIRAS technology
LIRAS Optical has developed a proprietary thermoforming technique that produces complex shapes from flat polycarbonate and PMMA sheets while maintaining consistent thickness throughout the component. The result is a transparent component that retains its optical quality even with complex curved geometries for automotive, aerospace and marine applications. Heat bending is used for components with simple or moderate curvature, providing high repeatability and short cycle times. Both techniques accommodate polycarbonate, PMMA and engineering plastics in a range of thicknesses and formats.
